Animal hide paintings were created by Native American tribes to depict battles, the history of the tribe, or other important events. They used buffalo hides, and were worn by important leaders in the tribe. The students picked symbols used by ancient tribes and cut those symbols out of construction paper to create stencils. We used brown paper bags to create the hides, and then the students would place the symbols on the hide and sponge paint over it. The symbols are seen out of the negative space created from the stencil.
